As more Mainers consider electric vehicles, the pros and cons of EVs are rightly considered. Unless you know someone with a vehicle you could look at or borrow, the best options are to rent an EV or simply test drive at your local dealership.

Rent an EV in Maine

The Tesla Model 3 is available to rent through Hertz at the Portland Airport location. For under $100 a day, you can test one of the best-selling EVs globally. With AWD, a maximum range of 358 miles, and a 0-60 time of 3.1 seconds, the Tesla Model 3 is a great choice for an electric vehicle rookie’s first drive.

Also at the airport in Portland, Budget offers multiple EV models with limited availability. From the Tesla Model Y SUV to the Kia Niro compact SUV, options exist to test different types of EVs.

Take an EV test drive in Maine

Although Tesla does not have a dealership in Maine, you certainly know where to find Ford, Chevy, GMC, Hyundai, Kia, and Nissan dealerships. The upcoming Chevy Equinox SUV, Silverado EV, and Hummer EV are going to get a lot of attention and sell out quickly.

Volvo is ambitiously converting all models to electric this decade, with many luxury vehicles available currently. Check out Darling’s EV crossovers available for a test drive.

Where do I charge an EV in Maine?

Finally, the question about charging options must be addressed. The federal government’s plan for a 500,000 network of EV chargers along central roads and highways is not likely to be fulfilled for many years. Recently, Tesla agreed to open, 7500 of its fast chargers to other EV models. With over 17,000 fast chargers, these 250 kw chargers add up to 300 miles of range in as quick as 15 minutes.

In Maine, the charging network is growing as well. With over 400 public chargers, find them here:
